After 19 seasons as an assistant for the Warriors, the Wilmington, MA native and Worcester State University Alum, Mike Gennetti was named the head coach of Merrimack College football during the summer of 2024. Along with becoming the head football coach, Gennetti remained the play caller for the defense. He is now going into his 3rd season as head coach. Since becoming head coach, Gennetti & company have been competing in non-conference play as Independents with the rest of the schools athletic programs joining the Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference (M.A.A.C.). Most recently in 2025, Merrimack College football finished with a 4-8 record. Defensively under Gennetti, the defense did see some success. Out of 129 teams, they were ranked 15th Nationally in 3rd down conversation percentage, 40th in passing yards allowed, and T-34th in 1st downs allowed. The injury bug got to the Warriors a bit this season, but they were competitive in 5 of the 8 losses with the deficit in those games being 10 points or less. Merrimack pulled out a very thrilling victory over Fordham in the final game of the season winning 27-26.
The 2024 season was the inaugural season under Mike Gennetti for the program and first season as an independent program. That season ended for the Warriors with a dominating performance by the defense in a win over Fordham University 19-3. That win put Merrimack in win column to end the season with a 5-6 record. This season under Gennetti, the warriors were 2-3 at home and 3-3 on the road. The notable wins that season included a win on the road vs. Morgan State University, two high scoring performances at home against Colgate University and Stonehill College.
Since becoming a Division I institution, Gennetti has been on staffs that have made it to the Northeast Conference championship game in back-to-back seasons. Gennetti, who calls the plays on the defensive side of the ball had his defense rank first in the country during the 2023 season in third down conversion rate. Gennetti's staff has guided a defense has enjoyed tremendous success in recent seasons, transforming the group into one of the most respected units in the Northeast.
In 2022, Gennetti won Assistant Coach of the year through the Greater Boston Gridiron Club for the efforts and success of the defense as the Associate Head Coach and defensive coordinator.
